The Point Reyes National Seashore

The Point Reyes National Seashore is a unique area encompassing about 71 thousand acres along the California Coast less than one hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Start your visit at the Bear Valley Visitor Center, where you'll find award-winning museum displays featuring cultural, geological, and natural history elements of the area. Naturalist activities and interpretive displays help introduce park visitors to a wide variety of attractions such as whales, wildflowers, the Coast Miwok Indian culture, elephant seals, the San Andreas Fault, the historic Point Reyes Light Station, and many other interesting features of this amazing region.

The peninsula, its shoreline and the surrounding waters demonstrate a remarkable diversity for which Point Reyes has become well recognized world-wide. Over 900 species of plants and 70 species of mammals live here, and over 490 species of birds have been counted in the park. Seasonal migration routes passing through our area offer the curious visitor glimpses of many non-resident birds, as well as other creatures ranging in size from the monarch butterfly to the California gray whale. This is the place to see wildlife!

The cool, moist climate of the central California coast offers visitors relief from scorching inland temperatures during summer months and a vibrant environment in which to slow down and refresh our sense of wonder. With 150 miles of trails, dozens of unique beaches, and plentiful wildlife, it is a great place to rediscover the natural world within easy reach of the San Francisco Bay Area. The natural, cultural and recreational resources of Point Reyes National Seashore combine to create a rich environment where a sense of adventure, discovery, and reflection are enhanced.
